Cole made it to two hours before he made his way back up to Brandon’s room, his shadow in tow. “Hey,” he said to Brandon, who still lay on his side with his back to Cole.

“He never said he had a brother, Michael I mean.”

“He wouldn’t have, we had our reasons for keeping secrets.”

“He didn’t look much like you,” Brandon murmured and shifted his weight a little, cursing in pain as he moved.

Cole immediately tried to help him, moving pillows until finally, Brandon was near enough upright, albeit deathly pale with smudges of exhaustion under his eyes.

“He had blue eyes,” Brandon muttered. “But he had darker blond hair and his face was rounder.”

“We weren’t related by blood,” Cole said, “but by family. He was always the looker in the family.”

Brandon tried to smile, but apparently even that hurt and he winced. “We shared a place that second year at college, me, him, and Jamie. He honestly never mentioned you even when he was drunk.”

Cole wasn’t hurt by that; their family dynamic was a nest of secrets and lies. “He wouldn’t have.”

“But he always had a thing about organized crime here in Chicago. Varga, this guy’s name was. And apparently, Varga was making his money in human trafficking and drugs. Michael was always talking about it, and he pulled Jamie in first because Jamie wanted to be a cop.”

Brandon moved a little and huffed an impatient breath when his arm caught on the pillow. Cole leaned over and helped him again.

“Thank you.” Brandon cleared his throat. “Michael convinced us that Varga was a bad guy that needed taking down. You didn’t know any of this?”

Cole glanced back at Elliot, who was leaning on the doorjamb, arms across his chest.

“I was overseas, Army,” Cole said, being as vague as possible. “Called back home when Michael died.”

His chest tightened as he said that. He could clearly recall the day his squad leader had pulled him aside and passed on the news. Cole had left then and hadn’t gone back; with his time as an Army Ranger done, his skills turning to something more. Joining in an age-old tradition of vengeance that was more real now that Michael had died.

Why didn’t I stay out of it?

Because your sister is still alive. Because Amy needs you.

“Were you with Michael near the time he died?” He had to ask that, had to know that Michael had someone.

“We had Econ together. We’d been sharing all these stupid cat videos with this girl that he liked, and he was going to ask her out. But then he died, on the way home. They said it was a tragic accident; a drive-by shooting that went wrong. But I knew different. I felt it, and so did Jamie.”

“It had to be Varga,” Cole murmured.

“That’s when it arrived—a simple instruction, a note warning us that people would get hurt if we went to anyone.” He looked right at Cole, and his eyes were bright. “We were kids, still in college. Jamie
